You may have seen my previous posts (on Instagram) based around my intrigue into how CBD can positively affect mental and physical health. You may have also read the post stating that I wanted to do my own little experiment. Well… This will be explaining it a little more, but first it’d probably be beneficial to give a little information on what CBD is, where it comes from, and what research has found it to be useful for, in case you don’t already know.
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a chemical compound from the Cannabis sativa plant, also known as marijuana or hemp. It’s a naturally occurring substance that’s used in products like oils and edibles to impart a feeling of relaxation and calm. Unlike its cousin, THC, which is the major active ingredient in marijuana, CBD is not psychoactive. It does not get you high. It is known to have a calming effect on people without giving you the real high.
It has been researched to find that both mental and physical illnesses such as anxiety, insomnia, epilepsy, back pains, osteoarthritis and even cancer symptoms have been known to be helped by CBD. Now that’s a pretty impressive plant power, right?!
Like everything, you may get side effects with using CBD, but from what I’ve read, they are quite minimal e.g. nausea, fatigue and irritability may be caused by taking it. One thing to note is that CBD can increase the level in your blood of the blood thinner coumadin, and it can raise levels of certain other medications in your blood by the exact same mechanism that grapefruit juice does. So if your current medication states to avoid grapefruit whilst taking it, then avoid CBD. I appreciate there is a lot more research to be done, so please don’t think this is all there is to it. It’s always better to consult your doctor when thinking of trying things like this anyway.
So moving on to why I am testing this out, what I’ll be doing, and how I’m currently feeling (and have been over the past couple of weeks.) As you will know if you’ve been a follower of my blog and Instagram for a while now, I have experienced anxiety a lot over the course of my life, and continue to do so at times now. The past month has been difficult for me, annoyingly, as I had made good progress some months before. So I have decided to try CBD on a more regular basis to see if I feel any difference.
Up until now, for the past 2-3 weeks, I have been feeling anxiety on and off regularly. I have been feeling low and a sense of unease for a lot of it. I sometimes get nausea from it. At times I have felt the fight or flight adrenaline rush through me for no real reason, and as a consequence have had unpleasant physical symptoms. I haven’t been sleeping brilliantly the whole time, and just want to feel like my ‘normal’ self again. I want to feel genuinely positive and happy, and not just feeling like I’m going through a lull and making do with it.
So, what am I going to do? Well, I have previously tried CBD oil, and will be trying that again but on a more regular basis – I have bought the Jacob Hooey 2.75% CBD oil from Holland & Barrett, and this is what I have previously used. I am also going to try CBD tea, or CBTea, from The Tonic – a UK based company supplying a variety of CBD products, who I only came to know about once starting my Instagram/blog!
It’s been a bit of a rough time with work, causing most of my anxiety again, and not only that, I’ll be starting this as that time of the month comes around too. So it’ll be interesting to see how it affects physical issues for that, and mental issues.
I’ll start with having 1 cupnof CBTea a day for 6-7 days, followed by 2 cups per day for another 6-7 days (until the tin runs out – there’s 20 bags in a tin.) following that I shall use the oil. I’ll probably have to get some more tea as 2 weeks definitely isn’t enough time to really test it, so I’ll therefore then take a mix of a the tea and oil each day. We’ll see how I get on.
